KUALA LUMPUR: Over five million Malaysians have not fully tapped into MyKad applications, National Registration Department Director-General Datuk Azizan Ayob said. MyKad has seven applications – identification card, driving licence, international passport information, health information, e-cash and automated teller machine services, Touch ‘n Go service and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). “We are having a difficult time convincing the 5.7 million MyKad users to realise its full potential. “Statistics show that MyKad is under-utilised, especially among the 3.5 million people who have the MEPS cash feature and the three million with the ATM feature,” he added yesterday, when launching Mimos’ Intranet and Internet applications through MyKad. Azizan, however, said that there was slight increase in the usage of the Touch N’ Go feature, which now numbered about 500,000. Another major application of the 64K microchip processor in MyKad, the PKI, has only been used effectively by Mimos. PKI facilitates the use of the Internet, with a combination of digital certificate and authentication techniques. Organisations that offer PKI-based applications would resolve the security requirement for authentication Mimos president and CEO Dr Tengku Mohd Azzman Shariffadeen said they started using MyKad to conduct all work scheduling, claims, transport bookings, one-stop centre for meetings, seminars and training bookings. In Mimos, the MyKad can also be used for online business card applications and e-tender – a process that allows vendors to download e-forms and submit it online. Azizan said Mimos had shown that MyKad’s applications were not limited to containing personal information. “MyKad can also be used in a large organisation to improve the security of the flow of internal information, operations and administration,” he added.
