NRD to implement Mykad entry system

The Star, July 8, 2003

PORT KLANG: The National Registration Department will use MyKad for access control for its staff and visitors to the department through a pilot project before the system is extended to other government departments, ports and airports in the country.

Its director-general Datuk Azizan Ayob said the system would be introduced once the department had moved to its new building in Putrajaya, by end of this year. MyKad, which is the Government’s multipurpose card, he said, would be used as a security pass to enter its offices and controlled zones.

MyKad, which is the Government’s multipurpose card, he said, would be used as a security pass to enter its offices and controlled zones.

“We will introduce two systems, touch-and-go at normal security areas and the swipe-card method for tighter security zones,

“There are many areas where we need the touch-and-go and some places where more verification of particulars is required” he told a press conference after visiting Northport (M) Bhd.

Northport will be the first organisation to adopt MyKad for access control for its 3,500 staff and 28,000 clients.

In the wake of the Sept 11 attack in New York and in line with the Government’s move to provide a single card system for the citizens, Azizan said, MyKad would be the eventual solution for not only government departments but also private organisations.

He said MyKad’s ability to store personal identification and security details of the holders enabled the card to be an ideal security pass.

“Like Northport, we do not have to spend between RM15 and RM20 for a security pass on every staff and user of our facilities,” he said

The pilot project, Azizan said, would enable the Government to rectify flaws and make necessary improvements and adjustments to the system.

He commended Northport for setting the example for others in the industry.
