PENANG: Those who lose their identity cards can now call the National
Registration Department's special hotlines to apply for new ones under a
hassle-free system introduced recently.
They just need to read their identity card numbers over the telephone when
calling 03-7968-3258 to apply for the Government Multi-Purpose Card (GMPC) or
MyKad (single application) or 03-7958-8866 for MyKad (multiple applications).
The department's public relations officer Nurashikin Othman said the
single-application MyKad would be charged a RM10 fee and RM20 for multiple
applications. "Only those with colour photographs in their identity cards can
apply for MyKad while those with black-and-white photographs must go through
the normal application process," she said in a telephone interview.
MyKad (single application) contained the bearer's IC number and particulars as
well as automated-teller-machine and MEPS acccess, while the
multiple-application MyKad incorporates other facilities such as
automated-teller machine (ATM) access, Touch 'n Go electronic payment system,
driver's licence and international passport details.
Nurashikin said the MyKad (multiple applications) is available via telephone
only in the Klang Valley at the moment because applicants would be required to
collect their MyKad from the department's head office in Petaling Jaya. "For
those who lose their identity cards and want to apply through our telephone
line, receipts or temporary identity cards will not be issued to them. "They
can still apply using this system but we advise them to go to their state NRD
for easier processing," she said.
Nurashikin said all applications made through the telephone would be processed
by the head office and the MyKad sent to the state departments collection
through the verification of the applicants' thumbprints. "The application
processes will take about two weeks but applicants need to check after the
period to find out the status of their applications by calling 03-7956-3063 for
single-application or 03-7956-2941 for multiple-application MyKad," she added.
The GMPC is the world's first multi-application smart card which was introduced
to replace identity cards beginning this year. The switch to GMPC was first
introduced in the Multimedia Super Corridor area in April. The microchip in the
GPMCs contains six applications, to consolidate personal particulars, driver's
licence, passport and health data. The GPMC can also be used as a debit/cash
card and for the Public Key Infrastructure application, which is geared towards
promoting a paperless society.
