PETALING JAYA, July 10: The National Registration Department will soon be a
one-stop centre for application of identity cards, renewal of driving licences
and several other services.
Today it launched the renewal of driving licences at the NRD headquarters here
and 13 of its branch offices located mainly in the Klang Valley.
NRD director-general Datuk Azizan Ayob said it was the first step towards
making NRD a onestop centre for renewing and updating personal data on the
MyKad — the new identity card.
He did not elaborate on the other services which would be offered but it is
understood that renewal of international passports is one of them.
The NRD centres which are offering the services of licence renewal on the Mykad
are at Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, Kuala Lumpur, Klang, Kajang, Seri Kembangan,
Salak South, Kepong, Ampang Jaya and Putrajaya.
It can also be done at the Road Transport Department branches at Padang Jawa
and Wangsa Maju.
However, he clarified that MyKad issued after May 6 would not carry the words
"Malaysian Driving Licence" on the reverse side of the card.
"Having the words caused some inconvenience to those who obtained a driving
licence after they had obtained the MyKad. "That means they have to change
their MyKad so that the new card would have the words ‘Malaysian Driving
Licence' on the reverse." He said details of the driving licence would be
incorporated into the chip and when licences were renewed at the NRD
departments a temporary identification document would be issued which could be
used as proof of possession of a licence.
He also clarified that for a start only the Competence Driving Licences (for
cars and motorcycles) could be renewed at the NRD offices.
"Vocational driving licences can be renewed at NRD offices by the end of the
month. Currently vocational driving licences can only be incorporated into the
MyKad at the Padang Jawa and Wangsa Maju RTD offices." He said motorists could
still obtain a printout of their licences from any RTD counter.
On whether the renewal of licences at the NRD was fool-proof, RTD deputy
director-general Abdul Whahid Selamat, who was present at the Press conference,
said the department guaranteed that it cannot be forged.
"We will hold the vendor who supplied the machine responsible if there are
forged or false updating of driving licence data on the MyKad," he said.
Currently the MyKad can be incorporated with details of the identity card,
driving licence, inter-national passport, automated teller machine details and
Touch ‘N' Go cards.
To ensure smooth flow of enforcement, the RTD had been issued with 613 units of
mobile card readers and another 1,600 units of the mini reader while the police
received 1,557 units of the mobile reader and 11,470 mini reader.
"The enforcement officers can also verify details of the driving licences
through radio communication with any RTD offices," said Azizan.
