New way to detect the unwanted

New Straits Times, Saturday, October 13, 2001

PUTRAJAYA, Fri. – Malaysia Airports Berhad is considering the use of biometric technology at airports in the country to detect the entry of undesirable foreigners.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ling Liong Sik said the technology could identify a person through their iris. “The biometric method scans the eye because everyone is special and differs from one another,” he told reporters after presenting the excellence service awards to 19 staff of his ministry today.

Dr Ling said the biometric technology had not been used in any airport in the world but companies carrying high risks such as scientific research organisations had already used the technology.

Earlier, he received a call from Yemeni Syura Council president Abdul Azis Abdul Ghani at his office.

Dr Ling said they discussed follow-ups to the visit by Yemeni Minister of Transport and Marine Affairs Captain Saeed Abdullah Al-Yafe’e on Sept 14

He said they discussed the possibility of Malaysia implementing several construction projects relating to transportation. “They have also invited us to undertake the construction of more airports there.” – Bernama
